Android(Latest news)

To celebrate the 10 billionth download from Android Market Google is offering ten premium apps and games for just 10 cents/pence for the next ten days. The apps on offer include some of the most premium and high priced apps available from Android Market, and for the next week you can get them for virtually nothing.

Some of the apps on offer include SwiftKey X, SketchBook and SoundHound, and you can also get games like Minecraft and Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD. All of these titles are on offer for just 10 cents/pence plus taxes.

The 10 billionth app download is a big milestone for Android Market, and the same milestone was only reached by Apple’s App Store back in January. Apple have since passed 15 billion app downloads, but with Android’s market share increasing all of the time it will not be long before Android Market is on a similar level.

With Android users typically being less likely to spend money on apps than their iPhone counterparts, many are suggesting that this latest promotion is a move by Google to get more people interested in premium apps to see what Android is really capable of. If more people are brought round to the idea of paying for premium apps then more app developers might become interested in developing for Android too, meaning we could soon be seeing some more excellent apps and games like the ones in the current promotion.

The news of the 10 billionth Android Market app download comes shortly after the release of Ice Cream Sandwich on the Galaxy Nexus. New features on Ice Cream Sandwich, such as Android Beam, NFC and face recognition could open up a whole new arena for Android app development in the coming months.
